The Captain, Yankees Legend Derek Jeter Turns 44 Years Old Today

When Derek Jeter, a biracial kid from Kalamazoo, Michigan became a part-owner in the Miami Marlins MLB franchise, joining Magic Johnson as the only brothers to sit at an ownership table that is 99 percent caucasian, he elevated his status from legendary baller to iconic businessman. After failing to purchase the Marlins as a member of Jeb Bush’s bidding team, in August of 2017, Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria agreed to sell the franchise for $1.2 billion to the New York Yankees legend and his group led by New York businessman Bruce Sherman.

As a youngster in his 20s, Jeter helped revitalize a lost Yankees franchise and turned them into one of the most lucrative sports entities on the globe. His baseball prudence, leadership and championship swagger embodied everything that you would want in a player and future owner.

Jeter, who was the most popular player in MLB for 20 years, won five World Series as Yankees shortstop and helped make them a Top 3 sports franchise in the world. A 14-time All-Star, Jeter had a .310 career average and 3,465 hits before retiring in 2014.

Every day was like going to the office and his pens and pencils sat in the same coffee container every day for two decades. In other words, he was consistent, predictable and incomparably efficient.

He was the anti-PED era role model as he never hit more than 24 homers playing in an era where drug-enhancement ruined “The Show” and turned it into a video game. He did, however, have more hits than anybody over a 10-year period during his reign and inspired more future ballers than we could ever quantify.

His character was as valuable to the game as his physical attributes, and as much as Yankees fans have anointed every major member of that ’90s Dynasty royalty, Jeters jersey retirement resembled that of a Kings send off. Theres no greater Yankees legend still living since Yogi Berra passed in 2015.

Upon retirement, Jeter started his Players’ Tribune website and as an integral part of the Marlins ownership group, Jeters  positioning himself to control a number of mediums and be in front of any changes in the sports business and marketing landscape.

Hes the Wilt Chamberlain, Michael Jordan, and anointed saint of baseball all at the same time and hes still just 44 years young.
