WNBA President Lisa Borders Steps Down To Take Lead At Time’s Up

Its a bittersweet day for the WNBA. After three successful seasons as President of the Womens National Basketball Association, Lisa Borders is stepping down from her position to become the first-ever President and Chief Executive Officer of Times Up.

Since joining the WNBA in 2016, Borders has enhanced the leagues growth in more ways than one, which resulted in the WNBA recording its highest regular-season attendance in 2017, which hadnt happened in six years. Not to mention a full roster of WNBA teams and players appearing in a video game for the first time in NBA LIVE 18.

Borders’ reign is also responsible for the league launching Take a Seat, Take a Stand a program that donates a portion of WNBA ticket proceeds to designated nonprofit organizations committed to empowering women and girls.

In a press release, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver had some kind remarks in regard to Borders departure:

We are extremely grateful for Lisas leadership and tireless commitment to the WNBA. This is a natural transition for Lisa knowing what a champion she is for issues involving womens empowerment and social justice and fortunately for us, she leaves the league with strong tail winds propelling it forward.

Times Up is an organization that insists on safe, fair and dignified work for women of all kinds. In her new role, Borders will continue the organizations work to ensure equal opportunity and protection for all working women.

It has been an honor and my absolute privilege leading the WNBA and being part of what it stands for, said Borders. I want to thank Adam for giving me the opportunity and support to help grow this league. I am proud of the W players for their amazing talents on the court and their dedication to making an impact in their communities. I look forward to continuing my support for the W in my new role with Times Up. I will always be the W’s biggest advocate and fan.

NBA Deputy Commissioner Mark Tatum will oversee the WNBA on an interim basis, and a search for a new league president will commence immediately. You can check out the official release here for more details. The Shadow Leagues wishes Ms. Borders the best on her new journey,
