Tiger Woods Is Chasing First Place At The Players Championship

The Players Championship may sound like something Tiger Woods would have been invited to attend before he recovered from his "addiction," but it's actually the PGA Tour's unofficial fifth major. Woods has only won the event once in 14 years, and his stroke average in 55 rounds on the Stadium Course, before Thursday, was the worst of his career in any event in which he's played a minimum of 50 rounds. The No. 1 ranked golfer in the world is sitting pretty in fourth place after round one, however. Woods' only bogey came on the 18th hole. Woods, a noted perfectionist was generally upbeat about his performance after day one.

UPDATE: After going eagle on 11, Woods tied for first at 9-under par.

Via USA Today:

"I thought I missed all the shots in the correct spots and left myself some easier up-and-downs," Woods said. "I made a couple key putts here and there, and I really took care of the par-5s. I birdied all of them today, which is nice.

"The ball was going so far out there. Like on 18, I had 200 yards to the hole, and I hit a little 8-iron in there and it flew flag high; 3-woods were going over 300 yards; my 5-wood was getting out there near 300. It's so hot, so warm, and you get the right wind, and it's going a long way.
