The Bills Are Starting Some Guy Named Thad Lewis Against The Bengals

The Buffalo Bills found their savior in quarterback EJ Manuel, but apparently even saviors have knee problems. That injury cost the Bills a win against the suddenly resurgent Cleveland Browns last week, and it could cost them a few more.

Though Jet Fuel….er, Jeff Tuel (I really, really like calling him Jet Fuel, ok?) won the job out of training camp, he replaced Manuel against the Browns and managed 80 yards and a pick-six. That eye sore was enough for coach Doug Marrone (another, wait, who is that again? figure on the Bills), who named former undrafted Duke QB Thad Lewis as the starter against the Cincinnati Bengals, marking what is believed by me to be the first time an undrafted Duke quarterback has been named a starter in the NFL.

Lewis actually had a strong career at Duke, especially considering he was at Duke. Lewis set multiple records for the Blue Devils, including a streak of 206 passes without an interception. He was a four-year starter and was the finalist for the Davey O'Brien award in his senior season.

Expectations weren't very high for Manuel when he became the starter, and they'll be even lower for Lewis.  In all likelihood, this will be a short tenure for Lewis as starter of the Bills, but perhaps Lewis can make this unheralded, unheard-of thing a trend.
