The 2016 Shadow League Leadership Awards: Abner Mares

Each year, The Shadow League honors men and women of color who are trailblazers in the world of sports. This year we presented awards to four incredible men and women who are leading the charge across the sports world at the 2016 Shadow League Awards Presented by AT&T DIRECTV.

Among our honorees is three-time boxing world champion, Abner Mares.

Mares, who we featured in an episode of Driven last year, has been a champion both inside of the ring and out. A three-time world title holder, he’s also a champion within his community because of his commitment and hands-on involvement.

Mares has given back unselfishly, whether it be through an annual scholarship he awards to a student at his elementary school, his support of the LA County Sheriff’s Department Youth Activity League or his back-to-school backpack and haircut drives, among other initiatives.

With a career record of 29-2-1, Mares has proven to be a fighter once the gloves come out, yet it is his service to, and care for, his community that really makes him a true champion.

Congratulations to Abner Mares on being a 2016 Shadow League Leadership Award recipient.
