Sometimes you have to wonder whether top-ranked women’s tennis star Serena Williams ever gets tired of smacking the crap out of her opponents. She virtually dismantled Australian wildcard entry Ashleigh Barty as if it was payback for an offense incurred in a past life in their match at the Australian Open this weekend. Serena was just brutal.
The 6-2, 6-1 victory occurred Sunday night with Williams barely working up a sweat in only 31 minutes of action in the first set. The young teenaged challenger looked like a deer in headlights as lightning-fast serves from Serena left her scrambling all over the place. Po’ baby. Serena clear didn’t give a damn about her inexperience or inability to rise to the occasion. The 17-time major winner ended her match against Barty in 57 minutes.
Serena wrecked shop in 2013, winning 78 of her 82 matches and winning the Brisbane International title back on January 4. But all things are not created equal between Serena and older sister Venus Williams. The elder Williams sister was defeated in the first round of the Australian Open against Ekaterina Makarova.
In several recent defeats, Venus appeared to simply be going through the motions. Although she was clearly putting forth maximum effort against Makarova on Margaret Court Arena. She had a 3-0 lead in the third set before dropping the next five games. It was the second time Williams lost in the first round of the Australian Open in 14 appearances.
