Saturday Traditions: Rivals Unite – NC A&T Aggies vs NC Central Eagles

It’s one of the best rivalries in HBCU history and all of college football.

It’s only fitting that the inaugural college football game between North Carolina A&T and North Carolina Central, which took place in 1924, ended in a 13-13 tie. Ever since then, the Aggies and the Eagles have been engaged in one of the NCAA’s best rivalries.

We went behind the scenes this year in Greensboro to bring you the wonderful aromas at the tailgate, the genuine hugs and affection, the resounding brilliance of the bands, cheerleaders and dancers, and the overall vibe of the atmosphere that makes it a must-see destination for anyone who loves the concept of college football being wedded to and embedded within the loving concept of “Family.”

Depending on who you speak with, the game is referred to in Greensboro, Durham and throughout the state as either “Aggie-Eagle” or “Eagle-Aggie.” But it’s much more than just a great football game that takes place annually, especially as the schools are separated by only an hour on I-40 and the game routinely features star players who have competed with, and against, each other since high school.

After three consecutive years of losing to NCCU, A&T won this year’s game, 24-10. The Aggies finished undefeated, captured the MEAC title and are headed to the Celebration Bowl.
