Protest Against NFL Looms if Colin Kaepernick Isn’t Signed Soon

Whenever the threat of boycott looms, most mainstream institutions wait until the very last nanosecond to do anything about the problem. That’s if they decide to do anything about it at all. Right now, former Pro Bowl quarterback and Super Bowl competitor Colin Kaepernick is out of a job and most people believe that he is being punished because of his protest against police brutality last season. Despite that, the NFL, some coaches and players have been vehement in their denial that Kaep is not being blackballed.

Well, it would appear as if the pro-Kaep crowd has grown weary of waiting on teams to do the right thing.  Fans are making their voices heard via a petition threatening a boycott at Change.org that has over 130,000 signatures to date. Now, the NFL Is facing a headache bigger than Kaepernick’s social beliefs.

A Colin Kaepernick petition calling for a boycott of the NFL reaches 130K supporters https://t.co/5QSfLlsDMr

“We understand the NFL is very important to you. We also understand the purpose of Colin Kaepernick’s protest is FAR more important than any games you will ever watch. Simply put, if things stay the same for the way America — where ‘all men are created equal’ — treats people of color, then your loved ones, friends, and children will eventually be affected as well.”

“If you are appalled by [Kaepernick not signing], then show your power by boycotting the NFL until Kaepernick gets signed to a team,” the petition states. “This means to not watch any games, no social media comments about your favorite team before/during/after the games, don’t attend the stadiums, and don’t buy any merchandise which represents the league or your favorite team. All of this talk about owners not signing Kaepernick because of potential fan backlash seems silly considering the support he’s received already.

Kaepernick opted out of his contract with the San Francisco 49ers on March 1 and has had only one official visit with a team (Seattle Seahawks) since his free agency began three months ago. In that time, Mark Sanchez, Josh McCown, Brian Hoyer, Matt Barkley, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Blaine Gabbert and Case Keenum have all been signed. In case you didn’t know this before, none of the aforementioned quarterbacks has ever been better than Colin Kaepernick at anytime in their respective career.

There is currently a protest scheduled to take place at NFL headquarters in New York City due to the alleged blackballing of Colin Kaepernick on Wednesday, August 23.  At this point it’s anyone’s guess if Colin will be signed by then.  And, despite the conservative lean of many NFL owners, quarterbacks frequently get injured during preseason and the early part of the regular season.  But if Kaep isn’t signed in a few weeks, the National Football League may have given itself more bad press than it needs considering recent revelations about CTE and the continued behavior issues surrounding certain players.
