With the buzz caused by the recent US Women's World Cup win (the team's first in 16 years) in which they emphatically avenged their 2011 WC loss to Japan, Heather Mitts' next endeavor comes at the perfect time. The former Olympian will be hosting a new reality miniseries called Soccer Superstar which premiers Wednesday at 9pm on Nicktoons as part of the kid-friendly stations' special Nick Sports programming.
Mitts is a three-time Olympic gold medalist (2004, 2008, 2012) who has represented the USA Women's National soccer team in some capacity from 1999-2013 and was a member of the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup finalist team that lost a heart breaker to Japan.
Mitts played for the University of Florida, where she was First-Team All-American and helped the Gators win their first NCAA title in 1998, ending her stellar carer as Florida’s all-time leader in games played, games started and minutes.
Mitts went onto play in both former professional leagues--for the Philadelphia Charge in the WUSA and for the Boston Breakers, Philadelphia Independence and the Atlanta Beat in WPS. She played in nine career Olympic matches, including a memorable performance in the 2008 gold medal game victory against Brazil.
Mitts played in her last Team USA match in December 2012 and was allocated to the Boston Breakers for the new NWSL league before deciding to retire in 2014 and using her beautiful smile and captivating looks to focus on a career in television as a Soccer Analyst and College Football Sideline Reporter for ESPN, as well as a Soccer Analyst for FOX's coverage of the Women's World Cup campaign.
The four-night event, from Kris Lythgoe, searches for the next female soccer great. Fifteen teen girls from around the country - culled from tryouts in California and Florida - are judged on their soccer skills by National Soccer Hall of Famer Marcelo Balboa, Olympian Angela Hucles, and youth soccer expert Dan Metcalfe.
Thanks to our people at Premiere TV, The Shadow League's J.R. "Da Gambler" Gamble had a chance to speak with Mitts (wife of ex-NFL QB A.J. Feely) on the eve of her new, exciting minseries on Nickelodeon. Soccer Superstar is the first show of its kind geared towards teen girl soccer players. It's the American Idol for Soccer Players ages 15-18.
