NBA Expected To Pass Shot Clock And Clear Path Rules For ’18-19 Season

The NBA‘s Board of Governors are expected to pass a set of rules for the 2018-19 season.

According to Adrian Wojnarowski, these rules will include “re-setting the shot clock after an offensive rebound to 14 seconds from 24 to increase shot attempts, simplifying the clear-path foul rule and expanding the definition of “hostile act” to more easily trigger instant replay.”

Under these changes, a clear path to the basket would be in play for these three scenarios:

1. A personal foul is committed on any offensive player during his team’s transition scoring opportunity.

2. When the foul occurs, the ball is ahead of the tip of the circle in the backcourt, no defensive is ahead of the offensive player with the scoring opportunity and that offensive player is in control of the ball or a pass to him has been released.

3. The defensive foul deprives the offensive team of a transition scoring opportunity.

The NBA says these specific rules would eliminate the “need that a play starts in the backcourt.”

Board of Governors will vote on the three rule changes in meeting that will occur on September 20-21. They’ll need a two-thirds majority to pass the legislation and add it in the upcoming season.
