Mary J. Blige Set To Star In Surreal Take On Cop Cover Ups

I can’t even front on how much Mary J. Blige has grown as an actress. The two-time Oscar-nominated “Mudbound” star will take on a new horror thriller with a uniquely contemporary twist called Body Cam, Deadline reports.

The premise is about a group of LAPD Officers who are haunted by a spirit after tampering with the body cam footage to cover up the slaying of a young black person.

Blige will play an officer who is consumed by visions and decides to find the truth. This will be the nine-time Grammy-winner’s first starring role.

If executed successfully, this film could be yet another in growing list of surreal black-themed cinematic offerings that address some facet of the African-American experience in a manner that contrasts reality with absurdity to make a profound point, similar to “Get Out“, the upcoming “Sorry to Bother You“, FX’s “Atlanta” and even the cult-classic “Tales from the Hood.”

The Hollywood Reporter says the script was initially written by Richmond Riedel and rewritten by Nicholas McCarthy and John Ridley.
