Marvelous Marvin Bagley III Drops Hits Like An ’80s R&B King

BROOKLYN — Duke’s Marvin Bagley III came, saw and conquered during his one-and-done freshman campaign this year. He’s been named both the ACC’s Rookie and Player of the Year, along with earning a spot as an All-ACC First Teamer after averaging 20.7 points and 11.2 rebounds per game.

Marvin Bagley Is Duke’s Next Great Freshman This Decade

Marvin Bagley is just the latest Blue Devil freshman to come in and make the rest of the nation take notice. Since 2010, the Blue Devils have showcased some of the ACC’s most prodigious freshmen talent. Jabari Parker, Brandon Ingram, Kyrie Irving, Jahlil Okafor and Jayson Tatum have had some of the most productive campaigns of any Duke freshmen to date.

What makes his accomplishments even more admirable is that he’s really supposed to be a high school senior. Initially a member of the high school class of 2018, he reclassified to the class of 2017, graduated early from the Sierra Canyon School and enrolled at Duke, making himself eligible for the upcoming NBA Draft, where’s he’s certain to be picked among the top three selections.

If people thought it would take some time for him to transition into college ball, they were proven wrong on November 24th, when he posted 34 points and a Duke freshman record 15 rebounds in an 85-78 overtime win over the Texas Longhorns.

Two days later, he scored 30 and grabbed another 15 boards in an 8784 win over Florida. To close out December in a 10093 win over the Florida State, he scored 32 points and snatched 21 rebounds. Wake Forest felt the pain on January 13th, when he gave them 30 and 11 en route to becoming the ACC record holder for the most 30-point, 10-rebound double-doubles in a single season.

The barrage continued against Virginia on January 27th with his 30 points and 14 boards.

And it continued in Thursday night’s 88-70 win over Notre Dame in the ACC Tournament quarterfinals at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, where Bagley destroyed the Fighting Irish with 33 points and 17 rebounds.

If he was an ’80s R&B artist, his output this year would be considered nothing less than a remarkable string of platinum hits. So we went digging through the crates for some synergistic tunes of what he’s probably telling opposing teams during games.

The Fighting Irish had absolutely no answer for Bagley’s size, silky skills and athleticism as the freshman sensation notched his fourth game with at least 30 points and 15 rebounds this year.
