Potentially devastating injury for East-contending Celtics after losing Daniel Theis: Guard Marcus Smart suffers torn tendon in his right thumb. Story: https://t.co/1Djj60ZceU

Smart, 24, has been banged up down the stretch this season. He missed Wednesdays game with the injury and had just returned for eight contests after missing the previous 11 games due to a right-hand injury he got punching a picture frame.

If Smart can’t return, then challenging the offensive juggernauts prevalent in todays high-scoring NBA will be a tough playoff draw for Boston without its heart, hustle guy and top defender at 100 percent.

ESPNs Adrian Wojnarowski reports Smart will undergo thumb surgery on Friday and take it from there.
