Kevin Knox Is Bringing The Ruckus Early On At Summer League

With the timetable of Kristaps Porzingis‘ return from his surgically repaired torn ACL up in the air, Knicks fans will be looking for any bright spot next season. Some might even be hoping that the team loses as many games as possible so that David Fizdale and crew can land a lottery talent in 2019 to go along with first-round pick Kevin Knox, the 18 year old out of the University of Kentucky who has been getting busy in the NBA Summer League, scoring 22 points and pulling eight boards in his debut.

In Sunday’s 90-85 loss to the Utah Jazz out in Las Vegas, the 6-foot-9 Knox had 19 points and five rebounds.

He looks like the real deal. He’s been a human highlight film so far, and if we revisit the discussion about potential draft picks who would be perfect for New York, it seems we overlooked the most obvious choice.

Knox has been posterizing cats with a ferocity and intensity that New Yorkers can appreciate. For too long, the Knicks have been doormat, the soft squad that allows folks to come into MSG and break records and steal the thunder of the storyline.

From the looks of things, Knox is trying to be a go-to guy for the Knicks from Day 1. If hes going to bring the ruckus every night and develops into a star, then thats a stroke of luck the Knicks haven’t had in a long time. We already see that hes got a motor on him and the enthusiasm needed to lift an emotionally defunct franchise out of its doldrums. Knox just might give The Garden a homegrown, fan favorite they can truly support again.

Eye-opening is how I describe Knox, but I wouldnt start predicting a Rookie of the Year candidacy just yet. Lonzo Ball was Summer League MVP last season and he struggled in his first season. He didnt suck, but he wasn’t the superstar he appeared to be in the preseason against inferior competition. Caution says Knicks fans should just be happy that it seems as if the first pick of the Mills-Perry-Fizdale regime is a winner.
