Jon Jones Tests Positive For Steroids And His Future Is Up In The Air

In the whirlwind of drama that has embroiled the bitter rivalry between Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier in the UFC, the final straw seems to have been pulled. A failed drug test reveals that Jones has tested positive for steroids for his UFC 214 fight, where he defeated Cormier to regain the UFC light heavyweight championship.

Jones allegedly tested positive for the anabolic steroid Tturinabol before his recent victory over Cormier.

Jones reportedly tested positive from a sample that was collected following the fight’s July 28 weigh-in.

Regaining the light-heavyweight belt with a third-round stoppage of Cormier the next night, Jones executed a head kick that sent Cormier to the canvas and set up a pounding of 20 unanswered blows.

The fight was a culmination of a long back and forth battle the two had in the media and at appearances, where Jones stated he felt Cormier was not the rightful champion after he failed an out-of-competition test for a banned performance-enhancing substance that sidelined him for UFC 200. Jones was subsequently suspended for one year.

Cormier fought Anderson Silva instead at UFC 200, winning a unanimous decision.

This second positive test could result in a ban at least double the year he previously served. The UFC announced that the case will be adjudicated by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA).

Turinabol is an oral steroid that promotes muscular endurance and speeds recovery time. Many fans critiqued Jones’ enhanced muscle tone in the lead-up to the Cormier fight.

The UFC released the following statement on Tuesday night:

The UFC organization was notified today that the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) has informed Jon Jones of a potential Anti-Doping Policy violation stemming from an in-competition sample collected following his weigh-in on July 28, 2017.

USADA, the independent administrator of the UFC Anti-Doping Policy, will handle the results management and appropriate adjudication of this case involving Jones, as it relates to the UFC Anti-Doping Policy and future UFC participation. Under the UFC Anti-Doping Policy, there is a full and fair legal process that is afforded to all athletes before any sanctions are imposed. The California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) also retains jurisdiction over this matter as the sample collection was performed the day before Jones bout at UFC 214 in Anaheim, CA, and USADA will work to ensure that the CSAC has the necessary information to determine its proper judgment of Jones potential anti-doping violation.

Jon Jones – Can’t Be Touched (Highlights 2017)

I do not own the rights to this music, or movie clips. These are highlights of Jon Jones’ title defenses. Song by Roy Jones Jr. Can’t Be Touched, Can’t Be Stopped.

Jones is widely regarded as the greatest MMA fighter of all time. His two brothers, Chandler and Arthur, are NFL athletes that both won Super Bowls.

Jones’ biggest obstacles have been keeping himself out of trouble outside of competition. He had a DUI near his hometown of Endicott, N.Y. on May 19, 2012, running his Bentley Continental into a tree.

During a media appearance in the lobby of the MGM Grand, he famously brawled with Cormier in 2014. In December of that same year, he tested positive for cocaine metabolites prior to a bout at UFC 182 on Jan. 3, 2015, against Cormier. Because cocaine is only banned in-competition, no action was taken against Jones.

Jones was also involved in a hit-and-run auto accident in Albuquerque on April 28, 2015 that injured a pregnant woman, and he was stripped of his belt.

In late March 2016, he got into a dispute with an Albuquerque police officer. He was accused of drag racing and was issued multiple tickets. Jones contended he just revved the engine of his car but his exchange with the officer went viral.

Due to the various controversies, Jones has only fought once in the last three years, and upon beating Cormier, a mega fight with WWE star and former UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar was thought to be on the horizon.

That fight would have been arguably the biggest fight in UFC history.

Lesnar himself also has had drug-test failures and is currently suspended by USADA.

Jon Jones is becoming a cautionary tale in the rapidly developing world of mixed martial arts and folks are anxious to see what will happen with him next.
