Jon Jones Fined Over $200k And Suspended From MMA

Jon Jones could not convince the California State Athletic Commission that he didnt knowingly take a banned steroid prior to his UFC 214 championship fight against Daniel Cormier. The fact that turinabol was in his system during the event, plus his past hiccups with banned substances, were enough to take away his license to fight.

In a 6-0 vote, the California State Athletic Commission revoked Jones fight license and levied $205,000 in fines against him. The fine includes 40 percent of his $500,000 disclosed pay at UFC 214 on July 29, 2017. The vote provides the answer to much speculation about the trajectory of Jones’ career.

I dont believe we should end Mr. Jones career, but I do believe he should sit out for a while, CSAC Executive Director Andy Foster told the commission while it deliberated the anti-doping case.

The thirty-year-old Jones (22-1-1) knocked out Cormier at an emotional UFC 214, but then failed an out-of-competition urine test conducted on July 28th by USADA. Jones came up positive for metabolites of oral turinabol, a banned steroid. He passed two tests conducted prior to the fight on July 6 and July 7, and post-fight on July 29, though the latter sample was not tested for turinabol.

Jones may re-apply for a CSAC license at the conclusion of his case with USADA, which remains pending. In order to receive a new license, he must garner a majority vote from the commission in favor of him being reinstated.

Its been science that has been kicking me in the ass, if I can say that, Jones said during a hearing today in Anaheim, Calif., where he defended his character while invoking the spirit of Jesus to emphasize his point. Jones emphatically denied knowingly using any banned substance and he hoped it would win over his pool of judges.

I dont understand how any of this happened, Jones told the commission. None of this stuff makes sense to me. I have no clue how this happened. Im trying to figure it out like everyone else.

You can call me a little bit of a party-boy or a knucklehead, but a cheater is something Ill never say that I am, because thats not who I am.

Commissioners chipped away at Jones’ past encounters with law enforcement and banned substances, including admission that he didnt disclose a sexual enhancement supplement he claimed led to a positive test prior to UFC 200. The Commission went even further, drudging up the infamous 2012 car crash which Jones destroyed his Bentley, and a drag racing charge that led to his arrest for a 2015 hit-and-run crash for a parole violation.

I have 1,000 percent paid for the dumb things that Ive done, Jones said. Honestly, I put it on everything that is dear to me that I did not do steroids.

However, the glimmer of hope for Jones is that CSAC Executive Director Andy Foster said hed support Jones if he sought a new license with the CSAC after his case with USADA is resolved providing just the glimpse of a silver lining needed to resuscitate the career of “Bones”.
