John Madden Expected to Fully Recover Following Open Heart Surgery

The NFL announced on Thursday that Hall of Fame coach and color commentator, John Madden, underwent open heart surgery and is expected to make a full recovery.

According to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, Madden is in good spirits following the risky procedure.

I spoke to John yesterday. He sounds great, but is frustrated about being on injured reserve for the time being. He is anxious to return to action soon doing the important work he does for our game. Hes a tremendous fountain of ideas and we cant wait to get him back. We are all pleased to know that Johns procedure was successful and wish him a speedy recovery.

Since retiring from the broadcast booth in 2009 to spend more time with his family, Madden remains active in the NFL’s league operations as a co-chair of the NFL Player Safety Advisory Panel and a chair of the Coaches Subcommittee to the Competition Committee, per NFL Communications.
