Insecure’s Season 3 Will Highlight Toxic Black Masculinity

Season 3 of Insecure is around the corner, and as usual, there’s a lot to anticipate. Without giving too much away, Issa Rae opened up to The Hollywood Reporter to discuss the upcoming season’s uncharted themes and inspirations. According to Rae, the concept of black masculinity relating to black women is one that she is trying to explore.

“I dont want to give anything away! But I love black masculinity as it relates to black women. I think thats something interesting that we havent gotten a chance to explore yet and specifically toxic male black masculinity as it relates to black women. Im trying to find a way to explore that and get a rounded storyline that isnt preachy.”

She also teased a bit more about a concept that we not only will see in season 3 but one that we are all familiar with: Adulting.

“This season is about adulting in a new way. I think weve watched our characters really fumble and fuck up and in some ways, in your 20s you are allowed that but this season is about not acting like youre naive anymore or that you dont know better. So it is about, what does it look like to know better and to do better?”
