HBCU Football Recap- Keep Rising To The Top

It's hard to believe but we're nearing the halfway point of college football in the FCS Ranks. Five weeks are already in the books and conference play has already made things more interesting.

There weren't any huge upsets at the top of Black College Football. Tennessee State took care of business against FAMU, delighting their fans with a comfortable 30-3 homecoming win to improve to 4-1. Meanwhile, FAMU heads into MEAC play with an 0-4 record, its worst start in 30 years.

Speaking of the MEAC, the conference's top three teams came away with wins in varying degrees of difficulty. Conference favorite and nationally ranked Bethune-Cookman thought it had a warm-up against Division II Florida Tech, but found itself in a dogfight before coming away with a 34-33 win. South Carolina State was nearly upset itself, and needed overtime to put away a fiesty Hampton squad 17-10.

The MEAC team with the most impressive win of the day was North Carolina A&T, who stormed into conference play with a 38-22 win over Howard. Howard would get as close as six points in the second half, but A&T's control of the game was never really in doubt.

Down in the SWAC, both of the big matchups turned out to be one-sided. Southern put up a good fight in the first quarter against Alcorn State, but was outscored 49-9 in the final three quarters. Over in Montgomery, Alabama State made a big statement with a 38-3 beatdown of previously unbeaten Texas Southern.

At the Divsion II level, Tuskegee rebounded from a tough loss to Winston-Salem State with a 44-3 win over SIAC rival Lane. Winston-Salem State picked up its 25th-straight win against a CIAA opponent with its 35-7 win over Elizabeth City State.

The cream continues to rise to the top and we look forward to this weekend's action.
