Happy Birthday Trayvon Martin

Today, as we move past our various Super Bowl weekends, we awake to the passing of another birthday for Trayvon Martin. Gunned down by an armed neighborhood watchman who eventually evaded justice, Martins death was the spark for a renewed movement for the rights of the disenfranchised and oppressed in America.

Today, Trayvon Martin would have been 23 years old.

Today would have been Trayvon Martin’s 23rd birthday. Rest in power.

Since his passing, as well as the subsequent deaths of Alton Sterling, Mike Brown, Eric Garner, Sandra Bland, and others, hundreds of thousands have been moved to make a difference on a daily basis, while millions have been enlightened by the continued deluge of information proving a racially biased criminal justice system is not boogyman, but a continued, efficient and horrific impediment to the ability of millions to pursue life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness in any meaningful way.

Happy Birthday Trayvon Martin! You will never be forgotten!

As football fans riot, I am reminded that, in response to the unjust deaths of young Black men like Trayvon Martin (who would have been 23 today), rioting is considered an affront to humanity. Not endorsing violence. Endorsing honest examination of WHY & eradication of racism.
