Happy 30th Birthday Predator!

How can I forget that summer day 30 years ago when Predator debuted?

It was a particularly hot and muggy day in Central Jersey when my brother and I arrived at Quakerbridge Mall to see Arnold Schwarzenegger’s latest blockbuster action film. It as only three years prior that we were drawn in by Terminator and figured we’d grab a movie and the free air conditioning that came along with it.

The action jumped off the screen and smacked us in the mouth almost from the moment the opening credits finished populating the screen. The audience sees an ominous spacecraft flying near Earth to release a mysterious package into the atmosphere.  Then, the camera pans downward and what seems at first to be a peaceful blue marble is discovered to be rife with violence and destruction.  And what teenage boy can turn down some gratuitous cinematic bloodshed?  After all, it’s the American way. During the ’80s it seemed like every action movie had some sort of reference to the Cold War that was raging between the United States and the Soviet Union.

A team of U.S. special forces soldiers let by Alan “Dutch” Schaefer has been dropped off in the Val Verde jungle, a fictional South American country. The elite team includes Mac Elliot, played by Bill Duke, gunner Blaine Cooper, played by then pro wrestler Jesse Ventura, explosives expert Poncho Ramirez and CIA agent and former Army Colonel George Dillon, played by Carl Weathers.

They believe they’ve been dispatched as part of a rescue mission to free civilian hostages.  However, it is soon revealed by their CIA attache that the true meaning of the mission is to secure a spy and documents that had been captured by forces loyal to the Soviets.

However, unbeknownst to these warriors and their earthly concerns, a much more dire threat lurks within the jungle canopy, watching their every move. As the team disembarks a military encampment that they have effectively destroyed, they proceed to a designated rendezvous point but are picked off one-by-one, each in a uniquely grotesque manner, by a hulking alien that not only has weapons centuries ahead of those fielded by Dutch and his team of crack commandos, but a personal cloaking device that allows him to use the jungle foliage as camouflage.

Though crafted 30 years ago, Predator still holds as one of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s best movies.  However, for me, Predator was the first time I recalled seeing two black actors in support of a big time box office draw.  Even though they both eventually fell victim to the typical outcome of Black characters in sci-fi and horror movies, Carl Weathers and Bill Dukes were essential to the story arc and weren’t stereotypically scared or frazzled, which was par for the course in most mainstream films in which black characters were involved.  (Such as just about every Dirty Harry movie.)

As he tracks and kills his prey, the viewer comes to realize his true purpose on Earth isn’t for conquest, food or refuge but for sport. As the film progresses, the viewer sees the predatory alien remove the skulls and spines of his fallen prey to keep them as souvenirs.   The alien also has the ability to perfectly mimic any sound or voice after hearing it only once.  He utilizes this ability to confuse and totally creep out the hunted throughout the duration of the film.

The original budget for Predator was $15 million, but the box office haul was nearly $100 million.  Not only did it solidify Arnold as a mega box office attraction, but it was also one of the most diverse sci-fi action films ever assembled at the time.

And 30 years later, we all still remember one of Arnold’s most famous lines.
