Hamstring Puts The Breaks on David Wright’s Season

The cycle of tease and torture Mets fans have experienced of late continues as All-Star third baseman David Wright was officially placed on the 15-day disabled list on Saturday after suffering a right hamstring strain. Wright suffered the injury during a walk-off win against the Royals on Friday night.

Mike Baxter was promoted from Triple-A Las Vegas to fill the huge void.

Nothing has gone right for the Mets this season. They just started to show some life, splitting the last 10 games and creeping towards that 50-win mark. Now, they have lost the indispensable face of the franchise.

"There are certain guys you really almost can't afford to lose and he would fit that category for us," manager Terry Collins told NJ.com."(Friday) was a tough day for us."

That’s an understatement.

Wright, young hurler Matt Harvey and Nas concerts are the only reasons people come to Citi Field these days. Wright is the big chief of an offensively inept squad that ranks 28th out of 30 MLB teams in batting . He entered Saturday leading the Mets in batting average (.309), on base percentage (.391) and hits (126) while ranking second on the team in home runs (16) and third in RBI (54).

Regardless of what this team does, tragedy is always peeking around the corner. Wright started the night off with a dinger and put the Mets ahead in the first. Then he led off the 10th inning with an infield single and, as he crossed the bag, he pulled his hammy and bent over in anguish. Shortly after, he limped into the clubhouse.

It’s not like the Mets had much to play for in the first place. Wright’s absence and a promise by team execs to be buyers this offseason are a few of the reasons why Mets fans can’t wait until ‘14.
