Good Morning 1.11.13

The Miami Heat lost to the Portland Trailblazers after Wesley Matthews hit back-to-back, cold-blooded 3s down the stretch. That’s the Blazers’ fourth straight win and they’re 12-3 in their last 15 games. Meanwhile, Miami is on a bit of a skid but still on top of the Eastern Conference.

Even with Carmelo serving his one-game suspension for the KG ruckus, the Knicks gave the Pacers a pretty good game before Indiana took the 81-76 victory.

What if the Heat really did make a move to rehabilitate Greg Oden under a veteran’s minimum level contract? It’s not like the squad has held a viable center since the end of the Shaq/Zo days. And it’s not like the defending world champions would have anything to lose, since they pick up centers just to take up space anyway. Just see Dexter Pittman, Eddy Curry, Zydrunas Ilgauskas, Erick Dampier and you’re starting to get the point, right?

Rob Chudzinski was hired as the new head coach of the Cleveland Browns. We know, name doesn’t ring out like Jon Gruden, Bill Cowher or whoever else the most delusional of fans was thirsty for, but “Chud” was decent with Cam Newton as offensive coordinator at Carolina for two seasons, and he was the Browns’ OC in 2007 when they won 10 games. Cheer up, Cleveland.

It doesn’t seem like Tim Tebow will be playing for his hometown Jacksonville Jaguars – not if the new general manager David Caldwell has anything to say about it.

Oregon handed No. 4 Arizona its first loss of the season.

DeMarcus Cousins picked up a flagrant-2 foul for shoving Vince Carter in the face. But this could’ve been an impulsive, reputation call. It was Cousins’ sixth personal foul of the game and he did at least try to break Carter’s fall.

DID YOU REALIZE?

A 16-year-old student shot another with a 12-gauge shotgun at a California high school. Fortunately, a teacher was able to talk the kid down and take the gun before any more damage was done. And no, that teacher didn’t use a gun to do it. He actually got hit in the head by a pellet, but wasn’t injured. The sheriff in that area says the teen claimed to be bullied by the victim, who was in critical condition on Thursday night.

EVERYTHING I AM

Jacob Lew is up for a helluva task if/when he’s confirmed as the Treasury secretary. He’s going to have to deal with the federal government’s borrowing limit, since the U.S. could default as early as Feb. 15. Good thing for Lew is that as the president’s chief of staff, he won’t have to do too much settling in and adjusting. It’s later when he starts dealing with tax reform, implementing Dodd-Frank and the president’s new healthcare law, and managing international economic relationships that could be challenging.
