Get Out’s Four Noms And How It Must Overcome Hollywood Racism To Win

“With elements of Alfred Hitchcock and Rod Serling, Get Out is one of the smartest, scariest psychological thrillers I’ve seen in my life. What scares us partially defines who we are.” The Shadow League on “Get Out” (February 23, 2017)

Today is a day that will go down in history, and The Shadow League called it!  Right now, Jordan Peele, Daniel Kaluuya, and a multitude of others who had a hand in creating one the most socially-relevant horror films of all-time is beaming with the energy of a thousand suns at the news of their Oscar nominations.

Here are more of my initial thoughts about the film and what I believed Peele was attempting to get across with his visualization of the sunken place. Plot spoilers are below, but you likely already saw the movie. So, read on.

The protagonist is made more suggestive to hypnotic commands by revealing an underlying, hidden pain when prompted by a stimulus. In the context of the film, the pain for Chris is the guilt of feeling responsible for his mother dying when he was a child. Missy seizes upon this pain to manipulate him and subdue his free will, putting him in a state called ‘the sunken place’.

Jordan Peele Breaks Down “Get Out” Fan Theories from Reddit | Vanity Fair

Jordan Peele, writer and director of “Get Out,” reads, confirms, and debunks fan theories from Reddit. Is “Get Out” just an imagined scenario of Rod the TSA Agent? What does the deer really symbolize? It the movie actually a sequel to Being John Malkovich?

In the contemporary mind of many Americans that fall into the African Diaspora, much of our pain reverberates from America’s original sin – slavery. And there are many who have seized upon that pain and manipulated it to their advantage as well. Another significant and striking artistic affirmation to real world phenomenon that some black folks fear has to do with white liberalism being more about satiating and controlling black longing for independence and not real justice.

Its silence, said Jordan after an introduction by Norman Lear at the PGA Awards just two days ago. Get Out is my protest against that.

He continued, Thats how I came up with the idea for the sunken place. The sunken place is the system that silences the voice of women, minorities, and of other peoplethe sunken place is the President who calls athletes sons of bitches for expressing their beliefs on the field and the homeland of our most beautiful immigrants sh*tholes. Every day there is proof that we are in the sunken place.

Indeed, its a great thing that Jordan Peele was brave enough to put this scathing criticism on display for all the world to gawk at in all its metaphoric and macabre splendor.

Back in the day, Spike Lee was infamous for being vague when describing what he wanted viewers to get from his films.  But Peele is walking in his confidence toward his destiny like a 15-foot grizzly bear in hunting season, rockin’ a bulletproof vest.  His chest is out, his head is high, and his confidence through the roof, Peele was the perfect person to bring this scintillating cultural critique to the big screen.

If he wasnt already beloved as a self-deprecating comedian and improvisational actor, this film would not have been made.  Imagine, if Ice Cube or Spike Lee decided to make this movie?   You already know it would have went straight to DVD or not have been funded at all.  No? Cmon, yall! It would have sunk under the weight what the world perceived of how Lee and Cube USED to be.

But Peele didnt have that problem, and slid one right on by them like a derelict grad student in the lunch line will no meal plan.

Daniel Kaluuya is in the mix for best actor, up against such heavy-hitters as Denzel Washington, Daniel Day-Lewis and young Timothee Chalamet, the youngest actor ever nominated in the category.  I didnt know who this British brother was before seeing Get Out, but it was readily apparent that his portrayal of Chris had to be given love in the highest reaches of film and television.

On February 12, the world will descend upon Hollywood, virtually, figuratively and literally, to see if this film will be immortalized.  Though I wish it well, 100 years of racist ass history in television is sneering at us all from behind the veil like a turtlenecked Bond villain.  But I do have faith.

Get Out has been nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor and Best Original Screenplay. If there ever was a time Hollywood could reassure us of its altruism and changing mission toward a more diverse tomorrow, giving this film at least two Oscars would go along way to that end.
