One of our brothers was taken too soon. Our thoughts are with Tyrone Moss’ family and friends during this difficult time. RIP, Tyrone.

Moss was a top recruit out of Florida who remained in his home state to play for the Hurricanes between 2003 – 2006. During this time, the Pompano Beach native rushed for 1,942 yards and 26 TDs in his career. In 2005, his best season with the ‘Canes, he amassed 701 yards and 12 TDs and, despite a season cut short due to injury, he was named to the first-team All-ACC team.

He was always jovial, just a happy kid, said his former Blanche Ely High School coach, Steve Davis. I can never remember a time when Tyrone was mad, even when we coached him hard. And we coached him hard because we knew how talented he was. He was always still smiling and laughing.

Like many of the backs at Miami, Moss was a legend in high school, where he rushed for 7,105 yards. In 2000 he rushed for 2,011 yards alone; it’s no wonder he was a Parade All-American and named by FHSAA as 100 Greatest Players of the First 100 Years when Florida celebrated 100 years of Florida high school football.

Its a total shock, Davis said. He was, by far, the best player Ive ever coached at the high school level. You had defenses and everybody that we played, all 11 guys knew he was going to get the ball. Hed still have 250 yards. You just couldnt figure it out. My greatest moment was watching him in that state championship. He had over 200 yards. He was just incredible. He was a great football player, but he was a greater human.

Moss ranks as the fourteenth leading rusher in Hurricanes’ history, and tied for ninth all time with Frank Gore in single game rushing for the school (195 yards against UNC). This is extremely impressive as the list consists of names like Duke Johnson (the school’s all time leading rusher with 3,519 yards), Ottis Anderson, Edgerrin James, Clinton Portis and Willis McGahee

He was just a super kid,” said Davis. “Really liked that guy and not just for his football prowess, but just the type of person he was.

RIP Tyrone Moss.
