Gervonta Davis Misses Weight And “Tanks” His Belt

Yesterday, Gervonta “Tank” Davis missed weight for the defense of his IBF junior lightweight belt against Fransico Fonseca.

Davis, who weighed in at 132 pounds, was two pounds over the 126-130 pounds title limit, will forfeit the title he won in January even if he beats Fonseca. If Davis loses, Fonseca would win the title. If Davis wins, the title would be vacant.

The 22-year-old Davis quickly took to Twitter to apologize to fans:

Gervonta Davis on Twitter

I’m young, I’m growing. I had a chance to make the weight I knew I couldn’t make it & that’s that. I will have a belt again

Davis had already spoken of moving up to the 135-pound lightweight class in the near future. With Mikey Garcia probably moving back down to defend his WBC lightweight title and also in the Al Haymon stable, that fight could be a real possibility.

However, it is unusual for a fighter that is literally the new face of Mayweather Promotions once Floyd retires again to miss weight for a fight of this magnitude.

Davis is seeking an 18th knockout in 19 fights in front of a potential record pay-per-view audience.
