Danny Jacobs Signs To Matchroom, Returns In November

Daniel “The Miracle Man” Jacobs is a true son of Brooklyn and one of the most feared fighters in the middleweight division. After losing a controversial unanimous decision to Gennady “GGG” Golovkin early this year, Jacobs has announced his return to action in November with promoter Eddie Hearn,  Matchroom Boxing and a new outlook on the game. The multi-fight deal places Jacobs (32-2, 29 KOs) as Matchroom Boxingsface of boxing in the U.S.

I’m truly excited to be joining Matchroom Boxing and HBO, said Jacobs via release. This is a new beginning for my career and I get a chance to showcase my skills to the world. I can’t wait to return to the ring in November, being active and recapturing the World middleweight title.

Classic Fights: Gennady Golovkin vs. Daniel Jacobs

Prepare for Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennady Golovkin by taking a look back at Golovkin’s UD over Daniel Jacobs in their March 18, 2017 bout. Canelo vs. Golovkin takes place Saturday, Sept. 16 live at 8 PM ET/5 PM PT on HBO Pay-Per-View.

Jacob’s hadn’t lost a bout since 2010 and was on an eight-fight knockout streak until he ran into Golovkin at Madison Square Garden. Jacobs is still managed by boxing impresario Al Haymon, however he will now be promoted by the British promotion outfit which has been making huge waves across the pond.

Promoter Eddie Hearn is responsible for young Heavyweight juggernaut Anthony Joshua. The duo sold out 90,000 seats in the Wembley Arena when Joshua fought former champion Wladimir Klitschko this year.

“It’s an honour to welcome Danny Jacobs to the Matchroom Boxing team and to join forces with HBO boxing to showcase his fights, said Hearn via a press release. I believe Danny has proved himself as the top Middleweight in World boxing and has one of the most inspirational stories you will ever see in the sport which must be told. We plan on keeping Danny nice and busy kicking off in November, then back in the spring with the obvious target of the Canelo vs GGG winner.”

No opponent has been named but, rest assured, a Jacobs win could set him up with the winner of the planned Cinco de Mayo rematch between Canelo Alvarez and GGG in 2018. The move to sign Jacobs marks a regional power shift in the dynamics of boxing where the U.K. market has become a competitive epicenter for the sport. Matchroom Boxing and promoter Frank Warren are leading the charge, however, Hearn has definitely edged out the pack by planting his flag in Brooklyn.

With tournaments like the World Boxing Super Series traversing the globe, with an emphasis on fights in Eastern Europe, the global prominence of boxing now has American stars looking across the pond for the best promotional partner. HBO has also been chosen as the 30-year old Jacobs’ network and with the retirement of former light heavyweight champion, Andre Ward, Jacobs can become a true star for the network.

Inspiring and electric in the ring, Daniel Jacobs is a true ambassador for boxing, said Peter Nelson, executive vice president, HBO Sports via release. Daniel is a force to be reckoned with in the stacked middleweight division. We look forward to watching his exceptionally bright future unfold as part of the HBO family.

WIth Golden Boy and K2 Promotions also on HBO, the matchups possible are vast and definitely pointed in the direction of the now stacked and popular middleweight division. Like The Beatles, Jacobs has validated Hearns and Matchroom Boxing’s ambitions to usurp the U.S. dominance in boxing and now have a seat at the table of the Empire State.
