It's not 1967.
It's 2017, but Boston Red Sox fans have forgotten that and are still treating opposing black players with disrespect and showering them with racial epithets.
Baltimore Orioles All-Star center fielder Adam Jones had his Jackie Robinson moment on Monday night. Jones was berated by racist taunts at Fenway Park while a bag of peanuts was thrown at him, calling it one of the worst cases of fan abuse he has heard in his career.
“A disrespectful fan threw a bag of peanuts at me,’’ Jones said, “I was called the N-word a handful of times tonight. Thanks. Pretty awesome.’’
Jones, one of just 62 African-Americans on opening-day rosters this year, said he has been subjected to racist hecklings in the past at Fenway Park, but said this was one of the worst experiences of his 12-year career.
Red Sox officials confirmed that one fan was ejected for throwing a bag of peanuts, but Jones rightfully asserted that the punishment should have been more severe than just being thrown out. It should have.
MLB can't tolerate any kind of racism, especially at this point. MLB players need to boycott Fenway Park if these embarrassing racists incidents continue. I hope the commissioner, who has been so big on diversity, steps in and does something about this before it gets worse.
“It’s pathetic,’’ Jones said. “It’s called a coward. What they need to do is that instead of kicking them out of the stadium, they need to fine them 10 grand, 20 grand, 30 grand. Something that really hurts somebody. Make them pay in full. And if they don’t, take it out of their check.
“That’s how you hurt somebody. You suspend them from the stadium, what does that mean? It’s a slap on the wrist. That guy needs to be confronted, and he needs to pay for what he’s done."
It's also sad that Jones was in no way surprised because that's just how Boston Red Sox fans get down after a few beers. Look as if Trump’s new America is really making racists and followers of disgusting, divisive ideologies feel free to be themselves, even at a baseball game.
Boston lived up to its historically racist reputation once again. Red Sox fans have proved to be some of the worst fans in baseball. Then again, Adam Jones did once warn us that "Baseball Is A "White Man's Sport."
I guess Boston fans were just reminding us of that. .
