Captain America: The Winter Soldier Opens with $300 Million

Captain America: The Winter Soldier killed all predictions and estimates this weekend earning $300 million worldwide with $96 million coming from over 3900 theaters in America. The second installment of the very first avenger broke records becoming April’s biggest opening, pushing the previous winner, 2011’s Fast Five, to the second best spot.

But there was something unique about this sequel doing so much better than part one which opened with $65 million its first week in 2011. There’s a reason why part 2 opened to bigger numbers than Thor: The Dark World. ($85 million). Some might point to this colossal win being based on word of mouth with Captain America 2 being action packed and entertaining. But others point to the introduction of Marvel’s first black super hero, Falcon, as another draw. Played by Anthony Mackie, Disney’s unique marketing campaign targeted to the “Urban” audience, helped bring in an African American crowd that dragged along their kids to witness history. Whatever the plan, it worked.
