Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennady “GGG” Golovkin Is Sold Out

Today it was announced that the long-awaited September 16th matchup between Canelo Alvarez and Gennady “GGG” Golovkin is sold out. The fight will be held at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas and is expected to be the true fight of the year in spite of Floyd Mayweather, Jr.’s return to the sport against boxing neophyte and MMA champion Conor McGregor.

Alvarez (49-1-1, 34 KOs) is the lineal and RING Magazine Middleweight World Champion and Golovkin (37-0, 33 KOs) is the WBC/IBO/IBF/WBA Middleweight World Champion. The fight is expected to be a center ring bang fest with the two both using an aggressive power punch-heavy Mexican style.

“The boxing public fully understands that this is the biggest fight in many years, and everyone at T-Mobile Arena on September 16 is going to experience a once-in-a-lifetime thrill of watching the two biggest stars in the sport go toe-to-toe, said Golden Boy Promotions CEO and Chairman Oscar De La Hoya.

Billed as Supremacy: Canelo vs. Golovkin, the 12-round affair will be on pay-per-view and is projected to sell in the millions. The fight is also taking place during Mexican Independence weekend, a weekend usually reserved for Floyd Mayweather, Jr. in his promotional heyday.

“When you put two of the best boxers in the sport and two of the best ticket sellers together, this is the result you get,” said Tom Loeffler, Golovkin’s promoter. “GGG has now sold out arenas in New York, Los Angeles, Monaco, and London. Now we can add Las Vegas to his resume. It’s the biggest fan and media response we have ever seen and this event should be as exciting in the ring on fight night as it has been for the build up leading to the fight.”
