“Avengers: Infinity War” Smashes Box Office Record History

With the successes of MCU films such as “Captain America: Civil War” and “Black Panther”, Marvel Studios was on a roll heading into the worldwide release of “Avengers: Infinity War”, which was moved up a week as fans clamored for more after T’Challa and company obliterated expectations.

Well they did it again this weekend and made history, again, as their latest release destroyed the competition en route to box office history. With the Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, Dr. Strange and Wakanda battling Thanos, “Infinity War” reaped in $250 million domestically, giving it the biggest domestic opening of all time, eclipsing former title holder “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” ($248 million).

The movie also brought in $380 million internationally, giving the film a worldwide total of $630 million, a worldwide box office record. The international figure places it second behind “The Fate of The Furious” ($444.2 million) in an opening weekend, but the latest installment of the Avengers franchise has yet to open in China or Russia, while F8’s opening numbers did include those markets, so it’s assumed that once it opens in those markets, records will continued to be destroyed like Thanos does planets.

It was unexpected and unlike anything that anyone would have projected, Disney Worldwide Distribution chief Dave Hollis said of the international opening numbers. Honestly, this is a result that goes unbelievably beyond what anyone would have expected. But its also a reflection of what 10 years of really methodical work and a great campaign, and an unbelievably strong movie and every single person being in the movie and what that means for driving people into cinemas.”

According to Deadline, the Top 5 openings for “Infinity War” were in the UK ($42.2M), Korea ($39.2M), Mexico ($25.1M), Australia ($23M) and Brazil ($18.8M). The movie is slated to open in China on May 11th.

These numbers means that the 19 Marvel Cinematic Universe releases have generated $15.39B in total, a ridiculous sum. And by the way, “Black Panther” brought in $1.3 million this weekend, which means it passed “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” to jump into the ninth spot on the all-time global charts.
