Alex Smith Falls From Mountaintop, Gets Traded To Kansas City Chiefs

For his first six seasons, Alex Smith stood on shaky ground in San Fran, no pun intended. After Harbaugh's hiring in 2011, Smith emerged as one of the most efficient, yet unspectacular quarterbacks in the NFL. Ironically, he'll now be leaving the Bay after a season in which he led the NFL in completion percentage but held a clipboard and headset over the second half of the season while backup Colin Kaepernick led the Niners to the Super Bowl. He climbed the mountaintop, nearly planted his flag on the summit of Everest and on March 12 when the trade becomes official he'll continue his descent into the bottom dwelling Kansas City Chiefs organization. In exchange for Smith, the 49ers will receive the 34th overall pick in the draft and a conditional pick in 2014.

Like Montana two decades ago, Smith will ignominously assume his position under center with the Chiefs after getting deposed by a backup. Auspiciously enough, the Chiefs have not won a playoff game since Montana outdueled Warren Moon in the Divisional Round of the '93 playoffs. Unfortunately, Alex Smith isn't Montana. He may not even be Trent Green. Smith's arrival also spells the end for Matt Cassel in Kansas City or any possibilities of the Chiefs trading out of the NFL Draft's top spot and spending their first round pick on Geno Smith or Matt Barkley.

Welcome back to the back to the bottom, Alex.
