Steve McQueen’s 12 Years a Slave has received much critical-acclaim since its release last year. That love has naturally been extended to the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards. Airing the evening of the Oscar nominations, where the film was nominated for 9 Academy Awards, the drama based on the life of Solomon Northup earned the Critics' Choice award for Best Picture. While the beautiful Lupita Nyong’o won her first award of the season, for best supporting actress, for her role in the film as Patsey. 12 Years' Screenwriter John Ridley won best adapted screenplay for penning the script as well.
The Fox Searchlight Picture went into the evening with 13 nominations, which tied it with American Hustle for most overall nods. Matthew McConaughey and Cate Blanchett won the award for best actor and best actress for their roles in Dallas Buyers Club and Blue Jasmine, respectively.
