The New York Jets Altered Webster’s Definition Of A “Pyrrhic Victory”

When you look up a synonym for a pyrrhic victory, last night’s “New York Jets’ 2013 preseason overtime victory over the New York Giants” is what you’d read.

After getting shut out of the end zone last season, the belief was that this preseason would be a more hopeful one for the Jets present or at least their future. Instead, Saturday night’s Titanic meets iceberg moment resulted in Jets fans abandoning ship in droves and leaving Rex Ryan behind to play melancholic violin music on the balcony.

Let’s just come out and say it. Geno Smith looked completely out of his element throwing three picks after competing just 44 percent of his passes. His completion percentage could have been worse, but Smith accidentally ran out of the back of the end zone for a safety while attempting to throw it away in the second half.

Ryan finally put Smith out of his misery and gave a few snaps to likely starter Mark Sanchez. Unfortunately, Sanchez was crushed by Giants defensive tackle Marvin Austin.

After the dust settled, a weary Rex Ryan engaged in a contentious postgame presser with the New York media.

There is no savior coming this season. The Jets are sinking fast and there aren’t enough lifeboats for everyone. The Sanchez injury could turn out to be minor, but according to Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News, the Jets are considering signing Matt Leinart and Trent Edwards.

It feels like the Jets are in a race to the bottom and it appears like they are winning..
