Derek Carr’s BCS Hopes Drove Off A Cliff

Fresno State didn't even see the L coming. The handwringing over whether Fresno State’s undefeated season would be deemed more worthy than Northern Illinois’ in the eyes of the BCS is over. The beef is settled. On Friday night, the other FSU involved in a BCS debate and their No. 1 ranked passing attack got T-boned by a mack truck right before the finish line.

There aren’t many times you’ll score 52 points and lose, but Fresno State’s defense met a buzz saw in San Jose State’s David Fales. Carr, who is now considered the favorite of NFL scouts to be the second quarterback taken behind Teddy Bridgewater, wasn’t even the best quarterback on the field against San Jose State. Fales also entered the season with considerable hype, but because of the Spartans’ 5-6 record entering Friday’s matchup, his shine wore off.

The defenses must have overdosed on the tryptophan in the Thanksgiving turkeys, because they both slept until halftime, when both quarterbacks had thrown for five touchdowns each. In doing so, Fales also thrust his name back into the discussion of sleeper draft quarterback prospects.

Jordan Lynch may never play in an NFL regular season game, much less start one, but at least Fresno State’s loss allows him to control his own destiny with a second chance at participating in a BCS bowl game if Northen Illinois wins the MAC Championship Game next week.

For Fales, their sixth win likely extended his collegiate career at least one more game as it moved San Jose State to .500 on the season and into bowl eligibility.
